From automobiles
and electronics to renewable energy, infrastructure and electric mobility, industries are
increasingly looking for materials that are durable, lightweight, conductive and adaptable.
This is also creating a growing need for non-ferrous metal scrap recycling in India, as
industries look for ways to supplement primary metal supply with recovered resources.

Non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, copper, lead and zinc already play an important role
across India’s industrial ecosystem. As manufacturing expands, the demand for these
metals is expected to grow. Meeting that demand, however, will require more than increasing
primary production. It will also require India to make better use of the metals already in
circulation.

That makes recycling an important part of the country’s manufacturing future.

Why Non-Ferrous Metals Matter

Non-ferrous metals are already integral to several industries in India.

Aluminium is widely used in transportation, construction, packaging and manufacturing
because of its low weight, durability and recyclability. Copper is essential for electrical and
power applications because of its high electrical conductivity. Lead and zinc also have
applications across batteries, infrastructure and industrial manufacturing.
India is the world’s second-largest aluminium producer, with primary aluminium production
reaching 42 lakh tonnes in FY25, according to the Ministry of Mines.

Copper demand is also rising. In FY25, India’s copper demand increased 9.3% year-on-year
to 1,878 kilotonnes, driven by infrastructure, construction, renewable energy and consumer
durables.

As these sectors expand, the need for reliable metal supplies will grow with them.

Manufacturing Growth Needs a Strong Metal
Supply Chain

India’s manufacturing ambitions depend on efficient and dependable supply chains. This
includes access to the raw materials required to keep industries moving.

This makes the non-ferrous metal industry in India increasingly significant. However, a
growing requirement for metals also brings a challenge: how can India meet future material
demand while making better use of its existing resources?

One answer lies in building a stronger domestic recycling ecosystem.

The Ministry of Mines has highlighted that India’s recycling infrastructure for metal scrap
remains underdeveloped and that the country has historically relied significantly on imported
metal scrap. Strengthening domestic collection, segregation and processing can help
address this gap.

Recycling: Turning Scrap into a Resource

Metal does not have to become waste simply because a product has reached the end of its
useful life.

Across the industry, non-ferrous metal scrap can come from sources such as copper wires
and cables, aluminium offcuts and used aluminium products. The exact material streams
handled vary between recyclers and facilities.

Through the right collection, sorting, processing and refining systems, valuable metals can
be recovered and returned to manufacturing.

This is the foundation of non-ferrous metal recycling.

Recycling can help create another source of raw material while keeping valuable resources
in circulation for longer. It also supports a shift from a linear model of extraction, production
and disposal towards a more circular approach.

The Ministry of Mines’ National Non-Ferrous Metal Scrap Recycling Framework aims to
develop a formal and organised recycling ecosystem, encourage energy-efficient recycling
and support India’s transition towards a circular economy.

For a manufacturing economy growing at India’s scale, this shift can have significant
long-term value.

Aluminium and Copper: Two Metals to Watch

Aluminium Scrap Recycling

Aluminium is likely to remain central to India’s manufacturing growth.
Its combination of strength, low weight and recyclability makes it useful across
transportation, construction, packaging and several industrial applications.
India is already the second-largest aluminium producer globally, with primary aluminium
production reaching record levels in FY25.

As consumption increases, recovering aluminium from existing products and industrial scrap
can become an increasingly important part of the supply chain.

Aluminium scrap can come from manufacturing and fabrication processes, including offcuts,
as well as from products reaching the end of their useful life.

Copper Scrap Recycling

Copper is equally important to India’s next phase of industrial growth.
Electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, electrical infrastructure, electronics and power
networks all depend heavily on copper.

India’s copper demand rose 9.3% year-on-year in FY25, reaching 1,878 kilotonnes, with
infrastructure, construction, renewable energy and consumer durables among the key
demand drivers.

Copper scrap can include sources such as used wires and cables, manufacturing offcuts
and other copper-containing products. Recovering this material through appropriate
recycling processes can provide an additional source of copper for industrial applications.
This makes copper scrap recycling in India an important opportunity – not only from a
sustainability perspective, but also from a resource and supply-chain perspective

The Shift Towards a Circular Metal Economy

The traditional manufacturing model follows a simple path:

Extract → Produce → Use → Discard
A circular model looks different:
Recover → Recycle → Process → Manufacture → Reuse

The idea is simple: keep valuable materials in use for as long as possible.
Developing a stronger circular economy can help India reduce waste while creating
additional sources of raw materials for growing industries.
But recycling at scale requires more than collecting scrap.

Efficient segregation, advanced processing, quality control and organised supply chains are
essential to produce consistent secondary materials that manufacturers can rely on.

Technology Will Shape the Next Phase

As products become more complex, recycling will also need to become more sophisticated.
Automobiles, electronics and industrial equipment can contain multiple metals, alloys and
other materials. Recovering these resources efficiently requires better sorting, processing
and quality-control systems.

The future of recycling, therefore, is not simply about processing more scrap. It is about
recovering more value from every material stream and producing high-quality recycled
metals that can return to industrial applications.

India is already taking steps in this direction. In 2025, the Ministry of Mines launched a
dedicated Non-Ferrous Metal Recycling Website and Stakeholders’ Portal to support a more
structured and transparent recycling ecosystem. The Ministry’s 2025–26 annual report also
notes that more than 600 recycling industries were registered under the ecosystem.

What the Future Could Look Like

India’s manufacturing growth will require more metals. But the future cannot depend only on
extracting and producing more.
It also depends on how effectively India can recover, recycle and reuse the resources
already available.

This creates a larger role for companies working in metal recycling in India. By combining
responsible processing, technology and quality-focused production, recyclers can become
an important link between end-of-life materials and the next generation of manufacturing.

The future of non-ferrous metals is therefore not just about higher production. It is about
building a more efficient cycle where materials can move from one product to the next,
reducing waste and creating greater value from resources already in circulation.

For Jain Resource Recycling Limited, this represents an important opportunity: to be part
of a manufacturing ecosystem where recycling is not an afterthought, but an essential part of
how India builds and grows.

Sources & References

Ministry of Mines – National Non-Ferrous Metal Scrap Recycling Framework, 2020
(https://mines.gov.in/admin/storage/app/uploads/65d843ec4cbf11708671980.pdf)

Ministry of Mines – Annual Report 2025–26
(https://mines.gov.in/admin/download/69945dabea1821771330987.pdf)

Ministry of Mines / Press Information Bureau – Non-Ferrous Metal Recycling Website &
Stakeholders’ Portal, 2025

India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF) – Metals & Mining Industry in India
(https://www.ibef.org/news/record-production-in-mining-in-fy25)

India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF) — India’s Copper Demand Rises by 9.3% in FY25
(https://www.ibef.org/news/india-s-copper-demand-rises-by-9-3-in-fy25-report)

India’s manufacturing sector is entering an important phase of growth.
