Metal recycling used to be talked about mostly in tonnes. Increasingly, it’s being talked about
in dollars, and the numbers being forecast are large enough to draw the attention of
manufacturers, investors and policymakers alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Global Picture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The global scrap metal recycling market was valued at approximately USD 435.50 Billion in
CY 2025, and is projected to grow to USD 614.00 Billion by CY 2034. That growth is
underpinned by rising volumes too: the world generated an estimated 535 million tonnes of
recyclable metal scrap in 2025, a figure expected to reach nearly 568 million tonnes in 2026
alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Broken down by metal, the picture is just as striking. The global copper scrap market, valued
at roughly USD 69.95 Billion in 2025, is forecast to reach USD 114.97 Billion by 2034,
growing at a CAGR of 5.7 percent. The recycled lead market is expected to grow from
around USD 25.78 Billion in 2025 to USD 38.26 Billion by 2034. Aluminium scrap,
meanwhile, is projected to climb from USD 56.77 Billion in 2026 to USD 91.49 Billion by
2034.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Much of Today’s Metal Is Already Recycled<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

These forecasts aren’t speculative bets on a future that hasn’t started. Recycled material
already accounts for a meaningful share of global metal supply. More than 30 percent of the
copper used globally comes from recycled sources, according to the International Copper
Association. Over 60 percent of global lead production originates from end-of-life products,
mostly used lead-acid batteries. Aluminium’s circularity is stronger still, with a global
recycling efficiency rate of around 76 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other words, the “opportunity” in these markets isn’t a bet on recycling becoming relevant.
It’s a bet on an already-large, already-proven system continuing to scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India’s Faster Climb<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

India’s own recycled metal market is smaller in absolute terms but growing faster than the
global average. Valued at roughly USD 14.14 Billion in CY 2024, it’s projected to reach USD
21.38 Billion by CY 2030, a compound annual growth rate of about 7.3 percent, nearly
double the pace of the global market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Part of that growth is structural. India’s scrap requirement is projected to rise from around 30
million tonnes today to more than 70 million tonnes by CY 2030, driven by steel, aluminium,
copper and automotive demand alongside a national push for circular economy practices.
Even with this growth, India still depends heavily on imported scrap, which is precisely the
gap that domestic collection, segregation and processing infrastructure is meant to close
over the coming years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why the Growth Curve Matters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The forces pushing these numbers upward are not short-term. The International Energy
Agency’s net-zero scenario projects copper demand rising by 50 percent by 2040, driven by
electrification, renewables and data infrastructure, none of which can be met by primary
production alone at a sustainable cost. Regulatory frameworks like India’s Battery Waste
Management Rules and EU-style recycled-content mandates are formalising scrap collection
rather than leaving it to informal channels, which tends to expand the addressable market for
organised recyclers specifically, not just the industry as a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
